2016 Campaign Update 2

Sain baina uu! (Hello!)

Two days to go before we fly to Ulaanbaatar–Bolor from New York and Thea from San Francisco. We’re almost too busy to be excited. Almost. Here’s what happening:

Tires for the Moveable Museum

The biggest expense so far has been these four tires for the Moveable Museum. Bolor spent weeks trying to source them in Mongolia or even nearby Chinese cities to no avail, but she did find them easily in New York. The only way to make sure the Moveable Museum was road worthy in time to make our full itinerary was to have these air shipped to Ulaanbaatar. In the end we spent about $3500 on them, which was roughly double our original estimate, but not over our margin of error. They’ll be there when we arrive on the 31st and the Moveable Museum should be in shape by the 3rd.

Building a Team

We’ll meet our volunteer educator Teddy and our paid Mongolian educator and assistant Bindi in Ulaanbaatar. Our drivers will be hired in Ulaanbaatar, and we’ll introduce everyone in more detail with future updates.

Perks

We’ve added up the estimate for what we need to allocate for all of your perks. We still have to get final real numbers, but it’s looking like about $5,500. This is way below our original estimate, thanks to all of you who went above and beyond with your contributions. We’re extremely grateful and so much more comfortable knowing we have extra room to work with on this expedition and for the coming year.

New Dinosaur Illustrations

We also kicked off our new round of Mongolian dinosaur illustrations with Emily Willoughby this week. We decided to let the kids in our workshops vote on the next set of 3-4 dinosaurs that get fully illustrated, so Emily is creating nine quick sketches and I’ll write short descriptions for each. Bolor or Bindi will translate into Mongolian. This way we figure the kids will have an extra reason to learn about each one, in order to become educated voters. Should be fun! And you won’t be left out–the round after that will go to our backers and social media followers. The illustrations will be used for our websites and outreach materials.

That’s all for now, the next update will be from Mongolia!
