The Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs (ISMD) has been a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in the United States since 2016. It was originally established in Mongolia by paleontologist Bolortsetseg Minjin, an accomplished Mongolian paleontologist who has been recognized as an Emerging Explorer by National Geographic and as a Wings WorldQuest fellow, in 2007 as a non-profit, non-government institution. We begin with a goal of promoting Mongolian paleontology with an emphasis on educational outreach and professional training for aspiring paleontologists.
In 2009, with the support of the Museum of the Rockies, we launched the first dinosaur-focused educational outreach project in Mongolia. This project reached 32 rural and nomadic kids who live near some of the most renowned dinosaur localities in the world.
Since then, we’ve continued to conduct educational outreach programs in the Gobi Desert, Western Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city. Since 2012 we have expanded our activities to the US to reach Mongolian children living abroad. The ISMD, with the help of generous donors, has provided financial support to Mongolian students pursuing graduate degrees in paleontology and geology. We also work closely with the Mongolian government to bring illegally exported Mongolian dinosaurs back home.

To strengthen geoscience education in Mongolia, conserve Mongolia’s fossil heritage, promote Mongolian paleontology, and edify the next generation of Mongolian paleontologists.
Vision
The vision of the Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs is to develop a self-sustaining active community of Mongolian paleontologists and a museum in Mongolia to preserve dinosaurs and other national treasures for generations to come.
To accomplish this, we have three core objectives:
Training of a new generation of Mongolian paleontologists
Building of a new museum for the exhibition and study of Mongolian fossils
Strengthening public and political support for paleontology in Mongolia
