2018-2019 Young Scientists Program Activities

In the first year of the program in 2018, we had four Mongolian high school students from Bulgan soum of South Gobi province who successfully completed the program and traveled to the United States to participate in the summer camp.

Our first year of implementing the Young Scientists Program was a challenge for us to run and finish a year long program successfully in the remote little town named Bulgan soum in the land of Gobi Desert, Mongolia. We started with less than 10 students who are interested in the program and 4 high school students have received the opportunity to participate in the Paleontology Summer Camp run by the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in Claremont, California.

Lecture Series

With our lectures, we teach fun paleontology facts and science fundamentals. At the same time, thanks to the technology and world wide internet connection that allows our students to have a chance to meet many different fields of scientists during the YSP!

Museum Field Trip

Our Young Scientists during a visit to the museum in Ulaanbaatar

People who live in the countryside don’t have many museums in the province and don’t get many chances to visit museums in the capital city. To give a diverse experience of museums, we bring our program participants to Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia.

In 2019, Young Scientists visited the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs, National Museum of Mongolia and The Dinosaur Exhibition of ‘Institute of Paleontology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences’ at Hunnu Mall in Ulaanbaatar.

ISMD Mobile Dinosaur Museum Internship

The first time Young Scientists program participants went on board of the Moveable Dinosaur Museum for their internship in 2019 was thrilling. Four students received the opportunity to travel and assist in organizing the Moveable Dinosaur Museum program in Arkhangai and Khuvsgul provinces of Mongolia with the ISMD team. During this short time of traveling with the moveable museum, young scientists had a chance to brush up on their paleontology knowledge, learned how to give museum tours for middle school students, and helped organize educational workshops.

USA Summer Program

Our Young Scientists hard at work during the Junior Paleontology Program

One of the most exciting adventures and rare opportunities for our Young Scientists Program is participating in the Junior Paleontology Program at the Raymond M. ALF Museum of Paleontology in Claremont, California.

During the Junior Paleontology Program, we had field trips and visited the East beach of California to find some shell fossils. During the overall summer program, we had field trip to Los Angeles Natural History Museum and Ice age L.A Museum.

Our students made many new friends who came from other countries.

Cultural immersion in the U.S.

Exploring during our visit to the BIOBUS

During our visit to NYC visit, we went to AMNH where Dr. Bolortsetseg Minjin works on her research of Mongolian dinosaurs and mammals. We saw dinosaur fossils like dinosaur skeletons which were found in the Gobi desert, Mongolia 100 years ago.

We also visited the BIOBUS mobile science lab and the main lab hall of the organization in NYC. During our visit, we did a lot of sightseeing too!

Paleontology Field Excursion with Paleontologist Dr. Bolortsetseg Minjin

Students learning about conducting field research

In June 2019, four students of the Young Scientists program worked with paleontologist M.Bolortsetseg on a field trip to the ‘Tugrug Shiree’ plateau. At the site our students learned about what you should do when you discover a fossil and how to protect the sites of it. For the first time, they saw the entire dinosaur head in the wild.

Furthermore, students received training on how to conduct field research in Bayanzag, and how to recognize real dinosaur fossils. With the training in the field, they practiced what they learned and found their first dinosaur fossil by themselves.
